CEO TRANSITION COMMUNICATIONS

When Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare prepared for a pivotal leadership change — the retirement of a long‑tenured, beloved CEO and the appointment of a successor who was less familiar to employees and the Memphis community — I created and led the strategic communications approach that ensured stability, continuity, and confidence across the organization.

Why it Worked

A Modern Human-Centered
Introduction

To shift away from traditional, disengaging and PowerPoint-heavy formats, I created a new quarterly leadership summit designed to energize and connect leaders. The first summit became the stage for the new CEO’s introduction,  delivered in a TED‑style format that revealed his powerful personal story.

He spoke openly about:

  • His childhood as a child soldier in Nigeria
  • Years spent separated from his family
  • Immigrating to the U.S. with only a few dollars
  • His journey toward healthcare leadership in Memphis
  • We even taught the entire employee population the correct pronunciation of his Nigerian name

This storytelling approach broke through his guarded demeanor and helped employees see the humanity, resilience, and purpose behind their new CEO.

“We needed employees to see the person behind the title — and understand the values that shaped him.”

A Coordinated
External Strategy

I also created and led a comprehensive media relations plan that secured meaningful coverage across Memphis and the region.

The strategy reassured patients, partners, and civic leaders that the organization’s mission and momentum would continue without disruption.

The Impact

“The transition became a moment of unity — not uncertainty.”

The results were clear and enduring:

  • Increased employee engagement and leadership alignment
  • Strong, positive media coverage across the region
  • A stable, confident transition with no disruption to patient care
  • A CEO who remains in the role today, guiding the organization as a leading healthcare system in the Southeast
